Illegal firearms remain a significant threat to public safety in
India and globally. An estimated 1 billion firearms are in
circulation worldwide, with around 85% of these firearms in
civilian hands. Small arms and light weapons are responsible
for an estimated 500,000 deaths each year.
In India, recent data shows that from 2021 to March 2023, the
Madhya Pradesh Police filed 28,231 FIRs for illegal firearms.
